About our cause
The British Deaf Association (BDA) is the national representative organisation for British Sign Language (BSL) and Irish Sign Language (ISL) in the UK. Our mission is to create a world where the language, culture, and community of Deaf people are valued and protected. This year, we’re focusing on "Early Years".
There are over 50,000 deaf children across the UK, over 90% of whom are born to hearing parents with no knowledge of sign language. Babies start to develop language from birth. Early language acquisition in the first five years is essential for a child’s development and wellbeing, yet access to sign language is limited, patchy and expensive. Parents are expected to pay thousands just to communicate with their deaf child. We are calling on the government to provide free BSL access for deaf children and their families.
There is a world of potential in every deaf child’s hands. We just need to give it to them. We need BSL in our hands, right now #BSLinOurHands
Your support makes our campaigning possible—together, we can get BSL into the hands of those who need it most.
Thank you and good luck!
